Figurative Watercolor Painting From Photograph With Ted Nuttall Details: (9:30 AM)
Class description:
TED NUTTALFigurative Watercolor Painting From Photographs, 5 Day Workshop with Ted Nuttall
Date: February 6th - 10th, 2012
Time: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
COST: $675
This workshop is sold out -wait list only!
About Your Reference and Drawing:
Please Note:
Although Ted will spend time in the workshop discussing drawing and the value and essentials of a good drawing, our focus will be on painting. In order to maximize painting time, please select reference photographs and have completed contour drawings ready for class. Bring both reference and drawing to class. Also, please read the following information carefully as it will aid you in your preparation for the class.
About your reference photograph:
If you are fairly new to figure painting, there are several things I suggest concerning your reference selection.
1. Ted recommends that you not paint someone you know for your first paintings. The added pressure of trying to get a likeness of someone you know can be confining and frustrating.
2. Do not use a photograph taken with a flash as reference. Loss of critical half-tone values and distorted light created by the flash make this an inadequate source from which to draw and paint.
3. Try to enlarge your photo reference so that it is close to the size of your painting. This will aid you in capturing the details you would like for your painting.
4. Avoid the use of magazine advertising or copyrighted photographs for your reference.
5. Ted suggests you convert your color reference image to black and white for reasons that will become clear throughout the course of the workshop.
About your contour drawing:
1. Ted recommends that you start with a quarter sheet size (11" x 15") or, at the largest, half sheet size (15" x 22") depending on your comfort level. A full sheet can be a challenge your first time out.
2. Do a contour drawing with enough detail to indicate all of the information you will need to do the painting. Take your time.
3. Don't get too involved with complicated or busy backgrounds. Focus primarily on the figure. Whether you do a full figure, partial figure or portrait - make the figure the dominant element in the painting.
4. Finally, be sure and invest sufficient time for your drawing. A good drawing will be a vital contribution to your making a good painting, as well as allowing you the freedom to paint more loosely.
Ted Nuttall is the quintessential people watcher, a habit that has engendered an intuitive ability to capture, in his paintings, the quiet, underlying character of his subjects. A graduate of Colorado Institute of Art, Ted is a figurative watercolorist whose painting expression was born out of his observation of people, his experience and travels as an illustrator for the United States Air Force, and a twenty five year career in graphic design. His work, as a designer, illustrator, and fine artist has won numerous national and regional awards.
Ted is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, and Watercolor West as well as a Royal Honor Society member of the Arizona Watercolor Association. He teaches watercolor workshops in portraiture and figure painting for arts leagues and organizations throughout the country. His workshops and private classes have been enjoyed by many who have benefitted from his personal and insightful instruction. Ted’s paintings continue to win awards in juried exhibitions throughout the country.
His painting “Every Sunday Morning” was selected to hang in the 138th Annual Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society and was the recipient of the Elsie and David Wu Ject-Key Memorial Award. His painting “Her Eye’s” was awarded first prize in Watercolor West XXXV Annual show and “Winter Sun | Red Bandanna” won the coveted Skyledge Award (Best of Show) in the 28th Annual Juried Exhibition of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. The Fall 2003 issue of American Artist’s quarterly magazine, ‘Watercolor’ featured one of Ted’s paintings on the cover and included an article about his background and painting methods as well as examples of his work. In addition, his painting “A Garden in Her Face” has been published in North Light Books’ Splash 8: Watercolor Discoveries.

Color & Light With Sally Strand (9:30 AM)
SALLY STRAND WORKSHOP: COLOR & LIGHT - February 17-20, 2012 930am-430pm Daily
COST: $595.00 (Model fees included)
The principles taught in this class are basic to all mediums. Color and light are the focus of the
workshop, along with essential elements of strong composition. Students explore color by working from costumed
models and/or still life. Optical mixing of layered color, as well as the analysis of the effect of light and substructure of
values and temperature are stressed. Each student receives individual attention and critiques. Demonstrations, lectures
and a slide show are designed to give students tools to achieve intensely beautiful color. Pastel primarily, all mediums
welcome, Beginner to professional, Instructor demonstrations in pastel, Individual instruction, critiques.
BIO: Sally Strand’s paintings are intimate reflections of everyday life. Intrigued by what is hidden in the commonplace -
but rarely noticed - she provides a commentary on daily life that presents to us the way we really are. "I am captivated
by light, and my interest in light is on equal terms with the content of a painting.” Strand pulls the extraordinary out of
the ordinary through the use of light and color. Assembling multi-layered surfaces in a rich complexity of form and color,
her paintings appear to emanate light from within. A native of Colorado now residing in California, Strand has been
exhibiting professionally as an artist for over 30 years. Influenced early in life by an artistic mother and a heritage of
artistic relatives, her childhood was a creative mix ranging from art projects to professional puppet shows. As a result of
extensive travels while a young adult, Strand recognized a need to portray her view of the world through art. Her
subjects became the familiar people and objects she carefully observed in the business of living - a man reading a
morning newspaper; light falling across a bowl of eggs; groups of people waiting, working, playing - slices of life. Strand
was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007, the highest commendation of the Pastel Society of America, NY. She is the
recipient of numerous top awards and honors, including the PSA Master Pastelist distinction received in 1997. Her solo
exhibitions in galleries and museums include a 2006 one-person retrospective of pastel and oil paintings at the

Her solo
exhibitions in galleries and museums include a 2006 one-person retrospective of pastel and oil paintings at the
Bakersfield Museum of Art in California. Widely published in books and magazines internationally, her work is also
represented in many corporate and private collections. Strand studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and at
the Art Students League and National Academy of Design in New York. She earned a BFA degree from the University of Denver. Strand teaches workshops and master classes around the country.
