Anyone viewing the splendid Basilica of St. Peter in Rome is awestruck by its immensity and majesty. Yet many are unaware of its dramatic history. With construction spanning well over a century, its creation fueled the ambition of thirty popes and some of history’s most preeminent artists and architects: Raphael, Bramante, Bernini, and a reluctant Michelangelo. St. Peter’s is not only an artistic triumph, but also a feat of engineering erected with little more than manual tools. But the ultimate cost was unimaginable as its controversial financing provoked the Protestant Reformation. Explore the inspiration, upheaval, and intrigue in this dramatic tale.
