Medieval books were hand written on parchment, written in dramatic Gothic lettering style offset with illustrations of jewel-crushed pigments and gold gilding. The new and literate emerging middle class created a high demand for books and scribes worked to put more words on a page by condensing letters, so the strong and rhythmic Gothic text filled the pages of European books and manuscripts. Later on Gothic became the first printers' typeface as seen in the Gutenburg press. Its dynamic beauty, popularity, and versatility is enjoyed today.
Gothic may look difficult but it isn’t. Actually it’s a great place to begin your calligraphic journey. You may not be new to Gothic but the New Year is an ideal time to brush up and sharpen your Gothic lettering skills. Because I teach in ‘family letters’ you’ll be writing words in Gothic calligraphy in our very first class!
Materials fee: $20, which includes your Pilot Parallel Pen. Materials fee is to be collected on the first day of class.
