Born in Texarkana, Texas, Duke Windsor served in the United States Marine Corps as a radio operator, combat illustrator and drill instructor. After leaving the service, Windsor was a freelance illustrator and former rodeo cowboy competing in bull-riding, bareback and steer wrestling events. After concluding his tour of duty, Windsor studied classical voice at San Diego State University and performed professionally with the San Diego Opera Chorus. Duke is a singer-songwriter and guitar player.
An avid practitioner of the martial arts, he has owned and operated a martial arts studio for over several years during which Windsor achieved the rank of 3rd Dan Black Belt with American Schools of Shaolin-Kempo from Headmaster, Robert Pearlswig. Years later he was awarded the rank of 4th Dan Black Belt in Kara Zenpo Go Shinjutsu from the founder, the late Victor "Sonny" Gascon.
Windsor is still continuing his practice with United Studios of Self Defense located in 4s Ranch.Windsor has over 15 years of exhibit design experience including eight years as founding Director of Exhibits at the USS Midway Museum. He currently serves as CADD Engineering Manager for Full Swing Golf Simulators, headquartered in San Diego.
Duke Windsor's Art Studio Practice
Duke has studied art all of his life and is continuing to seek more knowledge, skills and methodologies. Windsor still seeks out professional instruction, workshop, professional development, as well as an on-going active studio practice. Windsor's paintings have been exhibited and received many awards at juried solo and group exhibitions and corporate venues in San Diego and Southern California, and they are held in private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. He has also produced portrait commissions and military historical works. Windsor works in various media including pastel, oil, acrylic, watercolor, sculpture and block print, and his artistic scope ranges from plein air to abstract.
Windsor is currently an Associate Artist of the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, International Acrylic Painters Association and San Diego Watercolor Society and is a former board member with A.R.T.S.,(A Reason to Survive), which empowers troubled youth through the arts. He is also former Education Chair for the San Diego Museum of Art Artist Guild. Windsor has also served as a member of the Public Arts Selection Committee for the San Diego Regional Airport Authority Art Program. He has taught art to both adults and children at various venues including the San Diego Museum of Art, Bravo School of Art, San Diego Art Department and numerous lectures/workshops throughout San Diego County. Windsor has also had honors in being requested to juror for many local and regional art exhibitions.
Windsor's studio is located on Mt. Helix near the city of La Mesa, California.
