June 6-8 (Tues/Wed/Thur) | For students entering 6th & 7th in Fall 2017 The 2017 STEAM Camp will provide a 3-Day STEAM experience for students entering 6th & 7th grade in Fall 2017. Two sessions will be held: June 6-8 & June 13-15. The Camp will be in session from 8:30 AM -12:30 PM. Two snacks each day will be provided. Three credentialed teachers will provide instruction, with a student-teacher ratio of 10:1. Students may sign up for ONE of the sessions.
During STEAM Camp, instructors will guide students through learning activities in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences & Earth/Space Sciences.
Life Sciences: Web of Life: Students will engage in variety of activities exploring "web of life." These activities will illustrate how the web of life is an interdependent collection of systems, both plant & animal. A wildlife biologist will serve as “visiting scientist” & will bring 10-15 animals & have students explore the various aspects of the “web of life” that are reflected in the animals place in the web of life.
Physical Sciences: Chemical Magic: Students explore the concept that chemical reactions involving breaking of bonds between atoms. Students investigate reactions such as those that produce a gas, form a precipitate, cause a color change and/or cause a transformation of a given substance.
Earth & Space Sciences: Our Watery Planet, Spaceship Earth: Students will explore nature of water & its impact on the earth. The way in which weather & climate are influenced by forces such as sunlight, the ocean, the atmosphere & climate change will be discussed.
Learning Tools: Students will use Chrome Books, Duo Microscopes, & 3D Pens for building 2 & 3 dimensional models associated with their explorations.
Art/Creative Activities: During the three day session, students will engage in creative activities such as model building, reinterpreting scientific concepts using various mediums, & creating visual & oral representations of chemical reactions, climate change & the web of life.
Camp Fee: The cost of the three day camp is $161. Due to the generosity of donors, the fee to attend STEAM Camp is $90. Please register by May 15. Please honor the requirement that participants must be entering 6th or 7th grade in Fall 2017.
