Book Arts: Collaged & Altered

Discover the creative possibilities of contemporary Book Arts in this 4-week class. Guided by artist and Instructor Helen Shafer Garcia, you’ll construct a unique altered book using mixed media, collage, and a variety of surface techniques—including printmaking, paper dyeing, and simple bookbinding.

Working from an existing vintage book cover, you'll build a one-of-a-kind piece that reflects your personal vision. We'll explore creative structures such as foldouts, paper pockets, metal embellishments, and alternate stitching methods, while using a straightforward straight stitch to bind the book's signatures. Emphasis will be placed on both concept development and technical execution, with the goal of completing your book’s imagery and content by the end of the session.

Supply list will be available upon registration and you'll be provided with Helen's email should you have questions regarding supplies. $20 supply fee will be due to Helen at the time of class.
