Printmaking program at Fallbrook School of the Arts in Fallbrook, CA offering classes and workshops in block printing, etching, and more

Printmaking

Printmaking is an art form that involves transferring images from a matrix, or template, onto another surface, usually paper or fabric. A printmaker creates the matrix out of wood, metal, glass or other material, using tools or chemicals to work the surface into an image. Printmaking is one of the original programs of FSA since it began in 1997.

Dixon Fish is our master printmaker and Department Head responsible for vetting new instructors and managing the inventory and daily operations of the program. Our printmaking studio offers classes and workshops to foster the development of printmaking as a vibrant and progressive art form. From inexperienced students to professional artists can work in a variety of traditional and alternative processes including intaglio, monoprint, relief, lithography, screenprint, letterpress, book arts, and paper making.

The studio is comprised of three connected spaces totaling 1,850 square feet: a Press Room with 3 presses and large drying racks; Work Space with tables & chairs, magnetic hanging system, light table, a NuArc large exposure unit; and covered outside Deck Space with a fourth press, a hot plate, deep sink, and a large inking table.

This is the only program that offers daily rentals to qualified artists. If you are interested in renting the studio for a day, to produce your work, please call or email us.

Fun Facts About Printmaking:

The origins of printmaking date back to prehistoric times when humans used their hands as stencils to create images on cave walls.  Around 200 A.D., the first prints on paper and silk were made by Chinese scholars. Printmaking as art reached its peak popularity during the European Renaissance, primarily in the 15th and 16th centuries when techniques like metal engraving and etching became widely used, allowing artists to produce multiple copies of their work and significantly impacting the spread of art across Europe.
