Happy New Year and What will you create

Happy New Year! What Will You Create in 2025?

As we close out 2024 and look forward to 2025, I am reminded that everything in your life can change in a very short time.  This time last year, I was a full-time consultant looking for new clients, making sure to schedule lots of networking events and opportunities for myself. Then, in April of 2024, I received an unusual email from a friend asking me if I knew of anyone who would be interested in a director position at Fallbrook School of the Arts. Specifically, she asked, “Do you know anyone? Or could it be you?” Have you ever made one of those spontaneous decisions that, for reasons unknown to your conscience, you just say, with a resounding level of enthusiasm, “YES!”?  That’s exactly what I did, and my life is completely different, in the best possible way, than it was a mere twelve months ago.

Now, here I am, looking forward to 2025 and wondering, not only for myself, but for my instructors and for you, what can happen in 2025?  Consider this: What NEW THING will you TRY in 2025?  How will you tap into your creativity in the new year?  Before you answer (and I would really like you to email us and let us know what you want to do and how we can best support your desires), I’d like to share a few things with you:

According to research, the results are overwhelming:  exposure to visual art and participation in creative activities creates positive brain changes. Here are a few facts, backed up by years of research on the brain.

  • Exposure to art, even just viewing art, such as through our gallery, Fallbrook Art Center, can create new neuropathways in the brain and positively effects healing and mental health.

  • Art improves critical thinking and empathy. Engaging in creative activities can actually improve your ability to problem solve and act more empathetically towards others.  This is especially critical in children.

  • Art means less depression, pain and necessity for medical intervention.  Deep activation of brain systems through art reduces stress and creates happiness. Now, if you break your leg, a ceramics class won’t fix it, but consider that when you create, you are delving into the deepest parts of your brain and creating hormones responsible for feelings of happiness.

The bottom line is this: investing in art is good for your health, PERIOD! And it’s cheaper than therapy! So, you can’t really lose.  Even if you are one who thinks you are not creative (we hear it all the time) attempting to create (and you will get better the more practice you have) whether your creation is judged as “good” or “not so good” (and we won’t judge), still produces the positive health effects!

Art creates happiness and leads to a longer life. (I summarized that but do the research; it’s true!) FSA offers a holistic approach to art. We provide a positive, inclusive and nurturing environment for you to try a variety of classes or become proficient in the art medium you already feel drawn to.

So, what will you try this year?  How will you invest in your health while creating?  We can’t wait to see you at school.
