Cultural Appropriation and Cultural Appreciation in Southwest Art with Dixon Fish

What’s the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation in the arts—and why does it matter? In this thought-provoking discussion, artist and educator Dixon Fish will explore how artists can respectfully engage with cultural traditions, the consequences of misuse, and the responsibilities we all share as creators, collectors, and viewers.

Drawing on real-world examples, as well as his own personal journey from unintentional appropriation to meaningful collaboration with the Pala Band of Mission Indians, Dixon will illuminate how awareness and dialogue can transform artistic practice into one of respect and connection.

This event is presented in conjunction with the Southwest Artistry Exhibition, on view at the Fallbrook Art center from September 16 through October 18.
